Mark 6:30-32
The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

"Give it up for the Kitchen Staff!" Clap, clap, click, click, "Kitchen Staff!"  So goes it at camp when the campers are asked to give thanks to those who prepare the meals. Whether it is at camp or a fellowship event at church, there are those who serve in the kitchens so that the folks can relax, talk and eat. Hosting friends for dinner around the table of our homes for a leisurely evening of good conversation is a dying art, practiced only by a few in our fast-food-eat-on-the-fly culture. And yet, it is in those moments of peace, bread broken together, eyes fixed on faces telling stories that we discover, sometimes to our surprise, that we are truly alive and capable of love.

Help us, Lord, never to underestimate the power of a shared meal.  Amen.
