John 3: 8-9
The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”

Of all the Jesus movies that have been on the scene, Zefferelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" continues to be my favorite. I accept the fact that whoever plays Jesus will leave me wanting, but the casting of the other players in Zefferelli's mini-series was splendid especially Laurence Olivier as Nicodemus. Olivier captured what I have always imagined as a tortured, conflicted soul. Nicodemus was raised in the stony tradition of Judaic heritage and seeped in the political propriety of not messing with Rome. His own longing for justice and a new word sent him creeping around in the night for answers from Jesus, the leader of this rebellion.  In Olivier's portrayal, Nicodemus is the face of discipleship making - painful, messy, other-worldly and driven. If we have not experience, at least, part of Nicodemus tortured journey, we have much to learn.

Holy God,  lead and guide us in the way of truth. Amen.
