Mark 6:4-6
Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.” And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

On one of my freighter trips, the captain was a highly decorated seaman - honored by the president of Croatia for his courage and bravery at sea to protect cargo and crew.  His career involved months at sea and then months at home.  When I asked about his courageous exploits and what it was like to return home after months, the captain shrugged.  In his heavy Slavic accent he said, "For a week, I am king then I am treated like piece of furniture."  Jesus was a piece of furniture to the people of his hometown.  His ordinariness overwhelmed any great act.  We often turn our heads to the next bright light, the newest thing and dismiss anything that is just too ordinary. And in doing so, we miss the power of the Gospel.

Holy God, focus my sight to the power of the ordinary deeds being done around me every day. Amen.
