Luke 13:34-35
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

It is our tragic nature to push away anything or anyone seeking our best interest if it means threatening our freedom to believe we can do everything ourselves.  What a pitiable, pathetic lot we are.  Walk away, Jesus.  No, run!  We continue to be Jerusalem-like.  We don't want your Gospel of grace and forgiveness, justice and mercy.  It is just not believable and definitely not the way the world works.  Jesus goes about teaching, healing, praying until the time he turns for Jerusalem and won't take "No!" for an answer.  Jesus' love is bigger than our "No!" When will we get it?

Holy God, thank you for not giving up on us stubborn chickens. Amen.
