Luke 8: 35-37
Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear.

The people were so accustomed to seeing this man in a crazy state that when they saw him in his right mind sitting with Jesus, they freaked out. Listening to the various officials discuss the Orlando attack, I was pummeled to hear the phrase, "Get used to it....this is the way it is....this is what we are up against and it will happen again."  We are getting accustomed to the new normal.  I don't have answers to keep it from happening again. I do know I will lose my humanity by slow drip if, in the presence of Jesus scarred and alive, I assume there is no hope for someone who is not in their right mind or that the death is something to get used to.  It is in hating death as Jesus did and does, that we find the fierce power of life and love.

Holy God, have mercy on us. Amen
