“But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict.

Jesus warns of bad times ahead. His followers will be arrested and persecuted by all the powers that be. A reasonable response would be to build a fortress, gather weapons, and train an army. Jesus says, don't do any of that. Jesus says he will give us words and wisdom which will confound our opponents. Great. Terrific. Their lives were at stake and Jesus offers them....what?....talking points? Some of them suffered for speaking the words and wisdom of Christ. They all died. And yet, because of the words given to them by Christ, you and I are children of the present age - following Jesus. Our brothers and sisters in the past didn't fight just for themselves but for us as well. They fought the good fight with a Word.

Holy God, give us the right weapons for the conflict we face so that there will be another generation to follow you. Amen.
