John 11: 44-45
The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

Death is an overwhelming fact. It pounds at us in headline news. We turn it off until it slaps back at us with a name and a face we knew and loved. The fact of death crawls around. We step over it. We sweep it under the proverbial rug. We let in linger during funeral services we attend for others, but we throw it in the trunk in the parking lot on the way home. But there is the fact of it. Ready or not. It comes. The raising of Lazarus' was the trailer for a new movie about death. Death would come for Jesus but resurrection would come as well. The fact of death remains. Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, "..but the facts can always be mastered." Death is a fact that Jesus mastered.

Unbind us and let us live, Lord. Amen.
