All the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken; I will accomplish it.

Of the human traits, arrogance always makes me grind my teeth. There have been times when I am arrogant enough to lay low the arrogant with a parlay of rapier-like words. Lot a good that did! The only time the arrogant are truly humbled is usually in the presence of something great than themselves. When thunder rumbles, waves crash, volcanoes rearrange the furniture, we get schooled in our size and power relative to the powers swirling beyond our control in the world. God chose to lift up the small and poor and lay low the puffed-up and the wealthy. Those of us who claim to be in the middle probably deserve to be ignored entirely. But it would be arrogant on my part to assume that God didn't have plans for us as well.
