Jeremiah 1: 9-10
Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, “Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”

There was a Peanuts cartoon in which Lucy was seen building a snowman, looking at it, clobbering it, and then building a snowman again. The thought bubble over her head on the final frame said, "I am caught between the desire to build and destroy."  Jeremiah had the unhappy task as prophet to be the vehicle for words that would tear down and build up.  There are times when we need to stop what we are doing, wipe the slate clean and then start over in a new way.  We forget that destroying isn't the end and that building isn't alway permanent.  Jeremiah would have to be reminded often, like we do, that God knows what God is doing.

Holy God, when we cling too closely to anything that isn't you, remind us. Amen.
