When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name.

We are coming to understand the peril of being too removed from the land. Our food is more processed and every step of the process leaves us vulnerable to diseases and chemicals that just aren't good for us. Growing up, my mother tended two small patches of earth in the backyard. One of flowers, one of vegetables. Before a meal, she might send us children to harvest whatever was ripe among the radishes, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers or corn and blossoming among the zinnias. The idea of offering up the first succulent and bright products of the garden to the glory of God never occurred to us. We weren't much into saying grace before the meal. Somehow it should come as no surprise to us that the first disciples formed the Christian community around fasting, giving, and prayer. There is something holy about the process of growing, harvesting and eating food that can draw us closer to God.

For all the meals that we didn't acknowledge as a gift from you, Lord, forgive us. Amen.
