I Kings 8: 23
O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart

As a child, I wanted a duck for a pet. My mother promised to buy me one if I got a good report card. I did.  She broke her promise.  I was shattered more by her breach of promise than my lack of a duck. We both knew the original request was impractical, but the seal of the promise made it real.  God's knows how we need love and thirst for a promise kept. God shows love for us in a history of keeping covenant. We think we are, at least, half-way to being more God-like by making promises, but we fall short of living the nature of love when we make promises we cannot keep. Sometimes, we even do great harm. A covenant is a sacred bond of words written on the heart and sealed with the blood of life for life-giving purposes. May we recognise a false promise when we hear it. May we keep our covenants with the help of the God who knows how to keep covenants.

Teach us how to live our word, Lord. Amen.
