Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

If we were to invent a god...and we have throughout the ages....we would invent one in our own tainted image: It is all about ME. Worship me, love me, obey me. The ten commandments seem to start off that way but there's more and what that more is makes this God stand out among the rest of our pitifully invented imposters. This second section of the commandments about how we are to treat the other relationships in our lives reads even more deeply if we hear God's voice say in front of each commandment: "And another thing....." And another thing....respect mom and dad. And another thing....don't kill anybody(DUH!) And another thing... God is not all about the glorification of God's own identity. God wants us to cherish, protect, and respect every relationship we can imagine right down to our neighbor's donkey and anything else. The fact that God had to spell out to humanity the details of this life together with God would look like down to the kitchen sink is frankly a little humiliating. We can't say, "Stop, Lord, we get it!" because we don't. Jesus would later give us the Twitter version: "Love God. Love God's people....oh, and another thing.......as yourself. " This God does want our love but this God wants another thing. This God wants us to love each other and ourselves....right down to our neighbor's donkey and the kitchen sink. This God is not like any god we would have invented. Not by a long shot.
