I Kings 17:13-14
Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.”

The principle of "First Fruits" is an important thread woven into the fabric of God's people as they took form in the Old Testament.  The idea is to give God the first fruits of the harvest and the rest is ours on which to live. Most of us flip the principle in our bill-paying process. First, we pay the bills - the mortgage, the car payment, insurance, groceries, clothes and then, a portion of the leftovers may go to charities that serve God's purposes. That sounds about right.  That is the way the world works.  When we share from our abundance first, whatever the percentage, we discover that what is left is enough.  I can't explain the economics of it. Sometimes it makes no sense.  But when we offer God the first fruits, something happens to the rest of it and to us that makes life itself overflow.

Holy God, may we live generously this day. Amen.
