The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth

We understand judgement. We judge people. This is what we do. We see people. We hear people. We judge them by what we see and hear. We see and hear a difference and the relationship pretty much goes downhill from there. The prophet speaks of one that will show us another way to judge people. He starts with the poor and the meek and ....well, he loves and cares for them. Wait....what? That's it? Shouldn't there be more instructions? Shouldn't there be a criteria for who should get help and who shouldn't? Shouldn't there be some safeguard against abuses? To walk the way of Christ, to truly be a disciple is to be possessed by a different wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and fear. To walk the way of Christ is to know that we have been judged by one who doesn't decide based on what he sees or hears from us but by what we need.

What we need, Lord, is a new way to look at each other. Amen
