Psalm 46:9-10
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”

So what comes first - the chicken or the egg? Does the Psalmist offer up God's method of peace-making in chronological order: end war then destroy weapons or does God make peace by destroying the weapons? Enter the gun control and bear arms debating teams and the battle is joined. Let's face it. We humans can take sides and argue about anything. Some enjoy the verbal conflict for the sport of it. For some, it is personal and fired with passion. I confess to using my television's remote mute button with particular delight. To have the power to stifle the cacophony is an awesome weapon. And yet, the peace it provides is not a real one and temporary, at best. In the stillness, however, created there is an opportunity for another's voice to be heard. It is the voice of one who does not have to speak louder or faster than everyone else to be heard. Does the peace of God come when we choose to be at peace or do we embrace the peace when God comes in stillness? Can I have my egg with the chicken on the side? Did I hear a sigh? Sorry, Lord, stillness just doesn't come easily these days.

O Human, hush. Okay, now Lord, what were you saying? Amen.
