2 Peter 3:13-15
But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.

My neighbors are waiting for insurance claims and federal assistance to rebuild their living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens. Advent is a season of waiting for Christians preparing the celebration of the Christ Child and we are waiting for the fulfillment of a divine promise: a new earth. This is agonizing both the big and small of it. I am constantly being told, "Squeaky wheel....you've got to be a squeaky wheel to get results, to make it happen...that is just the way the world works....you've got to do it."
My theology, my personal understanding of divine relationship, my acute awareness of a world of hurt around me tells me that God hears the squeaking. I don't have to squeak MORE to get attention. It is the way the world works, the wheel that squeaks louder over the other wheels may, indeed, get its needs fulfilled, the waiting awarded. But we are still left waiting in this old earth waiting for a day when we don't have to drown out one another's voices to be heard. We strive for peace, perhaps by silencing our own complaint long enough to hear the patience of our Lord. It may not hasten the day, but it is better than squeaking into a cacophony of squeaks. Just maybe, just maybe....we will be able to hear a voice saying, "Shh, there, there, little one. Everything is going to be okay."

Holy God, thank you for not giving up on me. Amen.
