I Corinthians 1:9
God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

"Don't give up on me." It is the plaintive cry of those who are painfully aware that they don't deserve a second chance, but flinging their heart out to appeal to the hope that is within them that they can be saved. With us, all is the child still yearning to be loved and to belong, but we fall short. We are inclined to be faithful only to ourselves and there's the rub. How can we find fellowship inside a club that only has one member? The Greek word for "church" is ecclesia - to be called out. We are called out of ourselves and into fellowship and true fellowship with one another. Church is what happens when two or more people who have been at odds with each other are called into each other's presence, confess their shortcomings and break bread together. I dare say that Church happens in more restaurants, bars and kitchen tables than it happens when people stare at the back of each other's heads in a pew. But God is faithful and he is able to call out even those who are stuck in their pews pleading silently for second chances.

Holy God, may we trust our sins to your grace and our lives to the Body of Christ. Amen.
