Psalm 72:1-4
Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king’s son.
May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice.
May the mountains yield prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness.
May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor.

The season of Advent is a time of making ready. The royal psalms were written with the theme of kingship such as the anticipation of a king about to be enthroned. The people hope for the best in a king and can imagine what the best in kingship looks like. We hope that the king will be guided by God's hand and God's purposes. That the king will be one who rules with compassion for the most vulnerable, who isn't greedy with their riches, who will foster prosperity for all, who will have a deep sense of right and wrong and fight anyone seeking to oppress us rather than being the oppressor. We can imagine such a king and we hope for the best. The question that remains is: how ready and willing are we to be ruled? Our readiness and willingness to be ruled depends entirely on how much we trust the king who is about to rule. There is only one king I can imagine who deserves that kind of trust.

Lead on, oh King eternal, the day of march has come. Amen.
