Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

In church architecture, the ceilings are designed to be high so that it draws the eye up and with it, one's spirit soars. We are inclined to look up and beyond our usual line of sight when we are feeling alone or overwhelmed with the magnitude of the task at hand. We speak of God as inhabiting that space above us. We look up in prayer toward the God we often think of as looking down on us. I lift up my eyes, first to the ceiling and then to the sky. And I know and believe that God is indeed there in the vast arena of UP. But I am often caught off guard by the sound of someone clearing their voice while sitting gently in a corner where I least expected to find anything gentle, genuine help or the presence of God. Looking up is an act of faith no matter how close or how far our eyesight takes us.

Whatever I look, Lord, there you and I are together. That never ceases to amaze me. Amen.
