Psalm 80:17-19
But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you made strong for yourself.
Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name.
Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

The stages of grief are shock, bargaining, anger, depression and acceptance. We don't move through it in a neat fashion. We hopscotch. We backtrack. We bob and weave. We wallow. We put on the brave face, but it is a facade over a mess. This is not a linear process from one stage to the next. This is a whirlwind. A constantly fluid whirlpool of tasks to accomplish and emotions that leak all over the place. We scratch around to find the source because identifying the source of our unique pain is important. Equally important is finding the source of strength and light. I have always liked T.S. Elliot's words of love as the "still point of the turning world." It is from such a point we have the courage to identify the hand on our shoulder as love and point our faces toward the rising son.

We can do courageous things, Lord, when we know we are loved. Amen.
