I've seen them on road construction crews where lanes coming and going reduce to one requiring flaggers to stop one side from passing while the other flags the traffic through.
No envy for the flaggers' task Long days in the unforgiving sun forced to wear long-sleeves for mobile shade Mostly on their feet Mostly mind-numbing. God bless them if they need that work.
But I saw a couple flaggers doing the same work yet on the water for boats passing under a narrowed way beneath a bridge having work done.
The flagger's boats anchored to the side Festooned with a banner with their credentials. They turned on their perch to lift a green or red flag to little captains waiting for permission to pass puttering in the No-wake zone beneath the bridge and pelicans.
And then the flaggers turned back to their fishing poles and private thoughts. All I could think was I want their job.
