Psalm 72: 12-14
For he delivers the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper.
He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy.
From oppression and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight.

The characteristic of a king that the people of God desire is one who will have compassion on those who are helpless. It is easy to lose that muscle of compassion. It atrophies under the weight of numbers of war casualties and terrorist victims. The coming of Christ into our world and into our lives means that the responsibilities and characteristics we assign to a king now rest upon our shoulders as well. John Donne, the poet, said "No man is an island....I am involved in all mankind." The restoration of our humanity to compassion begins with seeking the faces and the names beyond the numbers. It strips us down to the raw nerve-ending of our souls but from that human pain grow hearts that do not have to be asked to help. They just do.

Holy God, may we rediscover our own humanity. Amen.
