Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

Our lives are filled with shadows, dark space, shut doors, unspoken ill will and twisted desires. We try to lead two lives - one in the dark and one in the light. The tension of our public and private selves takes its toll and we find ourselves not alone in the dark but in the company of guilt and shame that snacks on our bones. The Good News of God in Jesus Christ is that even though the light which shines on us stings at first, it brings us back into the company of the one who offered himself as a feast to save us from ourselves.

Holy God, coax us out the dark and into the light of your grace. Amen
