“When was the last time you cried and for what reason?” The question leads us to clues about what is important or perhaps what is stressing us right now.  Tears can roll for a variety of reasons but one important reason is because of something or someone for whom we feel passion. Jesus loved Lazarus. Those who were watching could see it. But Jesus also hated death. The one place in scripture where we see Christ’s tears is the place where his two great passions collide head-on. Jesus could do something about his love for Lazarus by raising him from the dead. Lazareth would live to die another day and because of that Jesus took his other passion- his hatred of death – to the cross.

Lord God, receive our tears and thank you for love us so passionately. Amen.
