The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.” Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman

A remarkable moment. Just then...Jesus tells the woman who he is. Just then...the disciples come and are astonished that Jesus is talking with a woman in public. Among the very first persons on the planet to hear Jesus identify himself is a woman, a person who lives in a world who values her unequally for the gender she was born into and who has embraced her worthlessness in the choices she has made. It wasn't until later, when John was mulling what events to record in his Gospel did the disciple recognize the significance of that tiny conversation. So it is that we are not always aware in the moment that we have had an encounter of the saving kind, but there is still hope for us all.
