In the movie "Field of Dreams," the often quoted line was "If you build it, he will come." That has become a marketing strategy for every aging Christian community trying to recruit new members from the younger generations. We build everything from coffee bars to multimedia light shows. We offer dandy, take-home parting gifts. Any effort is good and well-meaning but in the end has to be weighed on the basis of effectiveness. In my experience, people who come to worship often come because they are hungry. Hungry for peace, forgiveness, hope, healing, a change of pace, something good to fill the hollow emptiness. I am not entirely sure anyone can be convinced by bells and whistles to come to the Lord's table. I do, however, believe that we can help one another name the hunger we know.
