Exodus 32:1-2
When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

I wonder who decided that Moses was "delayed."  It is doubtful that Moses told them how long it would take since he himself didn't know.  Someone decided it had been too long according to their own definition of "too long."  They probably stirred up
others who were about ready to make their declaration of impatience.  The social media of the day was a bunch of people with too much time on their hands and it wasn't long before a few impatient people were just about everybody.  Faith and trust don't spread as easily as impatience.  One must braced against the rising tide of decent, stand one's ground and take strong steps forward.  It takes locking arms with those closest to us so that they too can move forward. God gave Moses what was needed to lock arms with  the ill-wind-driven people of God to pull them against the wilderness into  faith.

Jesus, hold us as we live and move.  Amen.
