Isaiah 40: 4-5
Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

My television was on this morning but muted as I went about my morning routine. There was an older gentleman with a kind face being interviewed. He was standing on a high place looking over a large city with a beautiful, snow-tipped mountain appearing in the distance in the mist. When I turned the sound on, I discovered the man was a scientist who studied volcanos. He was explaining that his homeland, Japan, had so many active volcanoes that it is just a matter of time before one or more exploded and would render the island nation uninhabitable. He said it could happen any time. Isaiah's words have always been muted to me. I heard them differently this morning. Getting ready for Jesus, perhaps, means being prepared for upheaval, change, the pain of death and hope of new life.

Holy God, even when our lives explode, may we turn to your voice and live. Amen.
