When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, they were afraid and trembled and stood at a distance, and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”

God had just given them the 10 commandments. Their response was "Moses, we are too afraid to listen to God, you speak to us and we will listen." They were really good at making excuses. The majority of my confirmands didn't do a simple assignment I gave them. The creativity, complex vocabulary and passion these young people used to express their excuses was noteworthy. Finally they were reduced to the best and most effective fall-back excuse ever invented - "I forgot." It is little wonder that sometimes God had to use all the forces of nature and a brass band to cut through the din of our little worlds to make a memorable impression.

Lord God, may we listen and obey. Amen.
