For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, “The one who is righteous will live by faith.”

I am not ashamed of the gospel. I admit, however, to wanting to see the power of it. When a person walks out of my office still rippling with the pain and confusion of a boatload of hurt and a storm of depression, I want to see the power of the Gospel surround their wet face with mighty love and make it all better. I know I can't make it better no matter how much I will it to be. But I want to see the power of the Gospel lift people surrounded by hopelessness into a life of joy. Time after time, when I hear myself screaming to see the power of the Gospel, especially when I am dangerously close to being ashamed of it, I hear God say, "the power of the Gospel is found in the suffering." So I lean into the suffering and that leads me to a man on a cross and that leads me to the only way to live, really live...by faith.

Heal those who suffer, Lord, please. Amen.
