2 Corinthians 9:7-9
Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. As it is written, “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

I had dinner with an economist once. He explained economics in terms that I could understand more than I ever had. When I asked him, however, how he would address poverty, he shrugged. He didn't know and worse, he didn't care. Though there doesn't seem to be any end in sight of the inequality of our riches, there is a need in every generation to appeal to our humanity. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge is remade because we constantly need to blow the dust off our generosity so that in the midst of caring for our neighbors, we might discover the divine in our own humanity.

May we, this day, Lord, grow more generous hearts. Amen.
