Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the
nations, I am exalted in the earth.”

The beloved verse "Be still, and know that I am God!" arrives like a steamy plate of comfort
food for busy people. It is also the voice of a frustrated God longing for his people to
turn away from the chaos of incredibly destructive behavior and remind them who they are
and who they are not. It is also a reminder that God is God. In the midst of chaos we are
hungry for leadership but rarely are willing to grant leadership the authority to lead. We are
in the habit of flailing around in order to protect ourselves. It isn't until we have felt that
calm and confident hand our back and that word in our ear, "Stay still, I've got this" that
recall for the bazillionth time what it feels like to have a God.

May we calm ourselves in your presence and trust your hand. Amen.
